2012 Burns' Supper Event Program

2012 Burns Supper Photos

We invite you to join us as we celebrate 252 years of Robert Burns, featuring a traditional observance of a time-honored Scottish event: Burns Night. Formal attire is required.

Date: Saturday, January 28, 2012

Location: The Fiesta Inn located at 2100 S. Priest Drive, Tempe, AZMap

On only one day out of the year, a special event takes place in almost every country in the world. It has been part of the Scottish culture for over 200 years where men and women get to dress up formally and meet up with descendants and lovers of Scotland, for a gastro-literary celebration of the life and works of the poet Robert Burns. It is an event that transcends time, geographical borders, political and religious beliefs, to bring people together in a traditional Scottish feast. We are delighted to inform you that the Caledonian Society of Arizona formally invites you to our very own Burns Supper on 28th January 2012.

Tickets: $50 per person.

Burns Night, effectively a second national day in Scotland, is celebrated on 25 January with Burns Suppers around the world, and is still more widely observed than the official national day, Saint Andrew's Day, or the proposed North American celebration, Tartan Day. The format of Burns suppers has not changed since Robert's death in 1796. The basic format starts with a general welcome and announcements followed with the Selkirk Grace. After the grace comes the piping and cutting of the haggis, where Burns' famous Address To a Haggis is read and the haggis is cut open. The event usually allows for people to start eating just after the haggis is presented. This is when the reading called the Immortal Memory—an overview of Burns' life and work—is given; the event usually concludes with the singing of Auld Lang Syne.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.
